Living Voices
This innovative combination of video and an interactive performer allowed over 90 school groups across Northeast Ohio to experience American history through the eyes of young people, whether as a new immigrant to America, a Holocaust victim, or as a suffragist. The Diversity Center, along with the Hershey Foundation and the Jewish Community Federation brought this popular series into town based on the program's success in prior years. See event details
Educator Series:
Count Me In: Diversity, Multiculturalism,
and Inclusion in Education
Northeast Ohio educators participated in an innovative series of interactive workshops that informed them about the newest research in multicultural and inclusive learning. Participants had the opportunity to engage in dialogue about diversity and obtain skills and strategies to create more equitable learning environments at their school. The event was presented in collaboration with the Greater Cleveland Educational Development Center. See event details
Cultural Competency in Healthcare Series
In order to address the health disparities that disproportionately impact minorities and the underprivileged, The Aetna Foundation generously funded a three part workshop series on Cultural Competency in Healthcare in the spring of 2008.
Each half-day workshop trained healthcare professionals about knowledge, attitudes and skills regarding cultural competency, and included a keynote speaker, an interactive breakout session led by Diversity Center staff, and a patient testimonial.

The Diversity Center brought together Cleveland area high school students for an NPR 90.3 WCPN town hall forum. This live on-air discussion focused on the controversial issue of blacks "acting white" and whites "acting black." Listen here...

Cultural Competency in Mental Healthcare Seminar
Over 150 participants enjoyed a full day of workshops, speeches and a panel, all on issues of implementing cultural competency in their practice of mental healthcare.
Dr. Heather Hall, MD, gave an informative keynote address and Lt. Governor Lee Fisher presented an inspiring luncheon speech. Workshops were facilitated by trained Diversity Center staff, allowing participants to interact around issues of diversity, inclusion, assumptions, and other issues tied into the overarching theme of cultural competency in mental health.
Testimonial speakers shared stories from the consumer's perspective, of their experiences with cultural incompetency, and panelists answered questions about how practical ways to implement cultural competency skills in the organization.
